| Written by Andre DP Encarnacion

In a memorandum dated Feb. 26, 2025, ÌìÃÀÊÓƵ (UP) President Angelo Jimenez announced the schedule for earthquake drills across all UP constituent universities (CUs) and autonomous units. These drills align with 2025 National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) initiatives happening across the nation.

The Philippines, located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, is highly prone to seismic activity, making earthquake preparedness essential. As Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Undersecretary Ariel Nepumuceno stated in a GMA News report, “This quarter’s NSED not only showcases our commitment to enhancing disaster preparedness but also underscores the importance of collaboration among government, private sector, and community stakeholders.”

They will be held on the following dates:

Quarter Date Time
1st Quarter 13 March 2025 2:00 PM
2nd Quarter 19 June 2025 9:00 AM
3rd Quarter 11 September 2025 3:00 PM
4th Quarter 6 November 2025 9:00 AM

All UP units are also encouraged to conduct their drills together with the following supplementary activities:

  1. Initial response (first 15 seconds of ground shaking): Open the door; drop, cover, and hold (DCH)

  2. Evacuation: Proceed to your designated evacuation areas promptly and calmly

  3. Headcounts: Evacuation Teams will perform an efficient headcount of their faculty, admin, REPS, students, among others, for each building, college or cluster.

  4. Incident Commander gives stand down orders

  5. Return to Posts: After the drill, everyone returns to their respective posts.

All UP units are required to document their drills and submit a report to the UP Resilience Institute via resilience.institute@up.edu.ph.
