The Ƶ (UP) came out strong in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject released on March 12, 2025. With an overall global rank of 101st to 150th, several of UP’s programs saw an increase in rankings from last year. Among these are: Law and Legal Studies, from being ranked 301st-350th globally last year to 251st-300th this year; Modern Languages, from 251st-300th in 2024 to 201st to 250th this year; Life Sciences and Medicine, from 401st-450th last year to 372nd this year; and Arts and Humanities, with a ranking to 351st last year to 331st this year.
According to the Office of International Linkages, the university’s strong performance in the latest rankings “underscores its commitment to academic excellence, research impact, and global engagement.” Aside from the rankings being a validation of UP’s continuing service to the nation, OIL said moving forward, the national university can “further enhance its academic programs, research output, and global partnerships.”
Several of the national university’s programs also maintained their global standing, contributing to UP’s overall ranking. Among these are: Archaeology (101st to 150th); Anthropology (101st to 150th); English Language and Literature (151st to 200th); Geography (201st to 250th); Politics (201st to 250th); Linguistics (251st to 300th); Sociology (251st to 300th); Medicine (301-350th); Business and Management Studies (351st to 400th); Environmental Sciences (351st to 400th); Economics and Econometrics (351st to 400th); Computer Science and Information Systems (501st to 550th); Engineering and Technology (501st to 550th); Mathematics (501st to 550th); and Biological Sciences (551st to 600th) globally.
The improved performance of several of UP’s programs are however offset by the decline of the rankings of several subjects in this year’s rankings. Among those which saw a decrease in global stature are: Performing Arts, from 51st to 100th in 2024, to 101st to 150th this year; Agriculture and Forestry, from 101st to 200th last year, to 151st to 200th for 2025; Social Sciences and Management, decreasing from 276th last year to 290th this year; Education and Training, from 351st to 400th in 2024 to 401st to 450th in 2025; Electrical and Electronic Engineering, from 451st to 500th in 2022 to 501st to 550th this year; and Physics and Astronomy, ranked 551st to 600th last year, and ranked 601st to 675th this year.
Some programs of the university are also ranked for the first time this year, such as: Mechanical Engineering, with a ranking of 501st to 575th; and Chemistry, ranked at 601st to 675th.
The subjects of universities are assessed by QS based on academic reputation; employer reputation; international research network; citations per paper; and the productivity of a university’s researchers.
