The Ƶ (UP) has been named one of the country’s top employers, ranking 15th in the latest Top 300 Employers list published on Oct. 23 by the Philippine Daily Inquirer in partnership with global market research firm Statista.

UP’s position marks an impressive rise from its previous ranks of 36th and 56th in the last two years. The 2023 survey considered more than 2,000 employers with 250 or more employees.

The ranking is based on an online survey of about 16,000 employees and Inquirer readers who rated their own employers on factors such as employee satisfaction and workplace practices.

UP President Angelo Jimenez credited the university’s distinctive appeal. “Our colleagues are drawn to UP’s unique academic culture and public service mission,” he said, noting these values make UP an exceptional workplace.

Statista conducted the surveys independently, ensuring anonymity to reduce distortion and ensure accuracy. Key metrics included willingness to recommend employers and general workplace conditions, allowing comparability across sectors. Respondents rated the likelihood of recommending their employer on a scale of 1 to 10 and could also advise against employers within their industry. Statista checked the evaluations for quality, interview length, and consistency.

UP received an average score of 8.82, just behind two other higher education institutions, Ateneo de Manila University (no. 12, 8.86) and De La Salle University nNo. 14, 8.84). The highest-ranked organization was Ayala Land, followed by Google, the Bureau of Fire Protection, Unilever, JP Morgan Chase, Samsung, Procter & Gamble, the Supreme Court of the Philippines, Accenture, and Toyota.

A culture of honor, excellence, and service

“It warms my heart to know that my colleagues in UP view it as a good place to work. We accept this recognition with humility and a measured sense of pride,” Jimenez said.

He emphasized that UP’s “friendly, collaborative, and supportive academic culture” fosters open dialogue and exchange of ideas, adding, “At the heart of this culture is the principle of academic freedom, which we steadfastly advocate and defend to create a respectful and inclusive environment.”

Jimenez highlighted the “intellectual stimulation, freedom, and opportunities for collaboration” that characterize life at UP, noting that the university’s commitment to freedom of expression, high standards in teaching, research, and innovation make it a unique environment.

He also pointed to recent salary adjustments and incentives for faculty productivity and publication as contributors to UP’s reputation as a top employer. “UP also nurtures civic responsibility, encouraging staff to engage with local communities and address societal issues,” he added.

Jimenez acknowledged the complexities of leading a university system, emphasizing the importance of vision, management, interpersonal skills, and adaptability in an evolving educational landscape.

“We move forward proudly and with a renewed sense of mission in our role, not just in higher education but in national leadership,” he said. “This recognition reaffirms UP’s commitment to honor and excellence in the service of the nation.”
