“Welcome to Taguig City in Metro Manila and welcome to Anthro on Foot’s walking tour!” says a friendly voice on the Anthro on Foot Youtube channel. This audio walking tour project, founded by UP alumna and anthropologist Raizel Pauline Albano, was recently awarded UNESCO’s  prestigious 2024 Global Awards for World Heritage Education Innovative  Cases (AWHEIC) in New Delhi, India last July 23, 2024.

The AWHEIC award was launched in 2022 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention and aims, in part, to select heritage education cases with contemporary exemplary significance around the world. It also serves as an avenue for global heritage practitioners to communicate and share ideas.

Winners were announced by the World Heritage Institute for Training and Research for the Asia and the Pacific Region under the auspices of UNESCO (WHITRAP).

Albano is the first Filipino to win the award. She was honored at the 46th session of UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee, and joined ten other heritage education projects out of some 300 entries in the “Star of Outstanding” category.

Anthro on Foot is a growing collection of now-57 audio walking tours from 17 regions across the country. On the izi.TRAVEL website, Anthro on Foot describes itself as a project that “normalize(s) affordable, accessible, and environment-friendly tours within the Philippines”. Each audio walking tour is self-paced and showcases an area’s significant heritage sites and cultural highlights via a voiceover.

“We are incredibly grateful for WHITRAP’s support and confidence in our abilities to amplify the powerful and colorful stories of the Philippines and (… coming soon) the Asia-Pacific region!” Albano said in a Facebook post about the award.

“Above all, thank YOU – our family, friends, team, listeners, sponsors, and media outlets – for supporting us along this exciting journey and helping us to get to where we are today.”
